A journey Through Culture- our visit to the Kungoni Centre of Culture IN Malawi(Dedza)
by Jacqueline Jimu.
Tucked away in the heart of Malawi lies a hidden cultural gem- the Kungoni Centre of culture. Our visit there was more than just a stop on our travel itinerary-it was a powerful dive into the soul of Malawian heritage.
From sacred dances and ancient stories to breathtaking carvings and paintings, the kungoni Centre offers a rare and intimate look into the traditions of Malawi’s diverse communities.
WHAT IS KUNGONI CENTRE?
Founded in 1976 by a Canadian missionary father Claude Boucher Chisale, the kungoni Centre is dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture of Malawi’s Chewa, Yao, and Ngoni peoples.
Located in Mua Mission, the centre is home to:
The chamare museum, A thriving community of local covers and artists, the Gule wamkulu performers

The Gule wamkulu- A living tradition
one of the most unforgettable moments of our visit was witnessing a live Gule wamkulu performance -a sacred ritual of the Chewa.
